Chapter Nine

Jessica, a suspect?

It didn’t sit well in Becca’s head. Her palms tightened against the steering wheel.

Jessica is a suspect.

It sounded better that way—the thought that is. But why? Mom was right all this time. Or perhaps, Mom was wrong and held responsibility for the suspect. What else would Jessica need with a maniac on the—Becca gulped… she’d rather be a murderer?

The red light blurred underneath her tears. She didn’t care if the people in the car next to her saw them fall down her face. Yesterday had been painful, and it led into a night of confusion. She’d stayed at Granny’s overnight, talking her out of taking the blame for Jessica’s disappearance. Jessica had already gone when she moved from Ron, Mom, and the twins. They’d broken her. Jessica took Becca’s place and became Mom and Beth’s new target. Before she showed up at Grandpa’s funeral, Becca had been the sole target for ridicule and bullying, minus the physical abuse. But no one knew that. Not even Daddy.

A horn blared from behind and prompted her to move through the green light.

The early evening hadn’t been so dark. This whole time, Becca thought her emotional issues, her breakdown in college, her confusion about who she was and what she wanted to be was the pinnacle of stress in her life.

But this was new. This was news. This was something worth stressing out over. Jessica was missing and she was an attempted murderer.

But why? Why was she consumed with this Father Paul and why didn’t she get help? Did she want to become a part of the trouble that made up the deep web?

Becca wiped the loose tears from her face and chuckled. Who was she kidding? Over twenty-four hours ago, the deep web was a myth to her, hyped up by conspiracy theorists who wanted something to fear.

Mom couldn’t find out about this. Becca could see her now, smiling so hard that her Botox wore off, showing the wrinkles around her eyes and lips. Then that venomous slither of her drunken, slurred voice would tease, “I told you she was shit. I’m always right.” She’d take another swig from her wine glass and belt out a hearty laugh.

Mom was wrong. Jessica wasn’t always shit. They made her that way.

Becca turned into her upscale neighborhood and made a right on Curvey Lane. The sleepy houses lined the street, undisturbed and well kept. This. This was the life Jessica’s mother, Jena, wanted for her. A chance to live a normal life, relative to Becca standards. This life that Becca considered normal exemplified just what Dr. Reid talked about in their sessions. Slide on someone else’s shoes for a moment. You might find they fit. For the first time, Becca got comfortable in Jessica’s shoes. She deserved this neighborhood, the twin’s high-end private schools, and Ron more than Beth, who shat on everything she’d gotten handed, or Becca, who almost tossed a free education away because she didn’t appreciate the little things. Or Mom, the sad woman who lived in the mansion alone most days.
